Cada tipo de whisky utiliza un tipo de madera en el barril, igualmente es la destilerÃa quien decide si utilizar barriles nuevos, o no, quemados o no, etc. En el caso de los whiskies de malta, los barriles han de ser de cagiga y que anteriormente hayan contenido vinos de Jerez o Bourbon.
